Salute from a Dead Comrade!
Some 54 years ago, my brother, Manuel T. Wacan of Tadian, Mountain Province and of Batasan Hills, Quezon City scored in a life-saving incident. Because of this, the National Scout Association of the Philippines awarded him.
Manuel Wacan as barely 19 then when the incident happened. The Sagada Postboy in its maiden issue of two pages, November 6, 1952 wrote about it, which I scanned only a month ago, thanks to the Internet. Here it is –
The Sagada Postboy Number 1, November 6, 1952 Last updated: July 2003 >>>>>>>>>>
Manuel Wacan, Scoutmaster of Troop 56, received a special award from the Philippine National Scout Association for good work done in an accident. A weapon carrier between Sabangan and Bauko fell off the road. Manuel was not injured; he did good first aid work for a number of passengers who were badly hurt. >>>>>>>>>>
I, being his youngest sister used to read a carbon copy of your citation, which he neatly framed and hanged on the wall. I could then read by that time and the whole thing made sense to me.
My brother is a Mr. Public Service. That was more than half a century ago. On June 2, 2006, my brother died of cancer at the age of 74.
I wish to thank the National Scout Association for recognizing heroic acts of its members and for imbuing in them a sense of community spirit that my brother has all of his lifetime carried with him. May you continue with your commendable service.
